What to expect in your second interview

Congratulations! You passed the first interview and got a call to schedule a second one. In general, first round interviews are designed to screen candidates and create a shortlist. A second interview aims to go into details to decide whether you’ll be a good fit for the role. It’s your chance to show you are perfect for the job!

Know your interviewers

You may meet with management, executives, and other company employees. Ask the person who scheduled the interview who is on the panel and what is expected of you. Research the individuals in advance. It will help you to be less stressful and more prepared.

Review your first interview and be prepared for competency-based questions

You may be asked some of the same questions you were asked during the first interview. You now have an opportunity to review these and brush up your answers. Be ready for new more detailed questions.

Expect targeted questions

When asking targeted questions about specific tasks you undertook or situations you had in a real life, the employer can find out how you may react in similar situations in the role you are interviewing for.

Some examples of targeted questions are:

  • Have you made an unpopular decision that delivered good results?
  • Have you taken key decisions independently without consultations?
  • Describe a time when you have been highly decisive at work.
  • What has been the biggest challenge in your previous roles?

Soft skills

In order to select the most suitable person for the role and the company interviewers are often interested in evaluation of your soft skills. Make sure you are ready to answer these typical questions.

  • Can you tell me about a time when you worked successfully as part of a team?
  • How have you resolved a conflict with a colleague?
  • What type of management style do you prefer?

Stay in selling mode

You haven’t signed a contract yet so make sure you showcase your strengths with good examples. The way you have contributed individually or as part of a team, is a great way of showing you can make a real difference to a company.

A successful second interview relies on thorough preparation. Take your time to run through responses, show your breadth of experience and expertise, and enjoy the process.
